Mrs. Baur's Classroom Newsletter

Welcome to May!

Religion

As we progress through this last full month of school, we will concentrate on the sacraments of healing.  We will discuss how God sent his only Son to die on the cross so he could save us from our sins and bring us to eternal life.  We will also emphasize the importance of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the need to go to confession more often.  Through this Sacrament we receive God's forgiveness and the gift of sanctifying grace is restored in us.  By receiving this Sacrament we increase our spiritual strength for resisting sin in the future. The other Sacrament of Healing is the Anointing of the Sick.  Through this sacrament the Church continues Jesus' work of bringing comfort and healing to the sick.

In Family Life, we will discuss parenthood.  The students will compare and contrast the roles mothers and fathers have in raising a family. They will also identify what qualities they see in themselves that will help them be good parents in the future.

"Is anyone among you suffering?  He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits?  He should sing praise."

James 5:13

Notes of Interest

In Math class we are working on a special enrichment project.  The students are learning what it means to be an entrepreneur.  In groups of 4, they have to design a product that uses 5 or less items to create.  Next, they have to figure out how much it cost to make the item and how much it will cost to market the product.  After that, they have to create their advertisement to sell the product.  Finally they will set-up shop to sell the product to their classmates.  After selling the products, they will determine if they made a profit. For the final evaluation, they will determine what they would do differently if they had to create a new product. They have been very excited about creating the products and designing their advertisements.  Hopefully they will make a profit at the end of the project.

Book-it Program:

We have concluded our Book-it program.  A pizza party will be given for the students who have read 5 out of the 6 months.  The students who are eligible will receive an invitation to the pizza party. We will have the party on May 0th.

Math

In our geometry unit, we have mastered measuring angles and triangles.  We have learned how to find congruent sides and angles with polygon figures.  Next we will work with circles.  We will explore the relationship between radius, diameter, and circumferences when measuring parts of a circle.

Students already know how to find the perimeter and area of a rectangle and square.  We will develop this concept further by finding the perimeter and area of triangles, parallelograms, and irregular shaped polygons which will involve knowing what formulas to use.

Last we will delve into 2- and 3-dimensional views of figures. We will label the parts of dimensional figures and find their surface areas.

Science

Last month students explored Newton's Three Laws of Motion by completing a variety of experiments.  They will wrap-up Newton's Laws of Motion by making a balloon rocket to see how his third law of motion works.  His third law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

From Newton's Laws of Motion, we will move onto energy forms.  We will discuss potential and kinetic energy.  To see these energies in action, the students will make a roller coaster to see where the greatest and least potential and kinetic energy is found.

Next we will discuss other forms of energy such as mechanical energy, electrical energy, and chemical energy to name a few.  They will learn that the law of conservation of energy states that the amount of energy that exists in the universe stays the same, but energy can, however, change from one form to another.

As we near the end of the month we will conclude our year with a unit on rocks and minerals.  Hopefully Dr. Rock will visit our classroom to introduce the students to the different forms of rocks.

Students will learn about the rock cycle and how rocks can be changed in different ways.  Students will have the opportunity to make the different types of rocks by using crayon shavings.  Now would be a good time to start making the shavings from old crayons.
