Mrs. Baur's Classroom Newsletter

Welcome to March!

Religion

This month we will review the importance of the Sacrament of the Eucharist for our lives.  We will pray the Eucharistic Prayer and understand that in the celebration of the Eucharist, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ.

We will also study the Lord's Prayer.  If we want to pray as Jesus taught us, we need to understand what he meant by the words he gave us.

During this Lenten season, as a class we are spending time discussing how we can become a better person.  For example, we can spend more time in prayer, we can help others around the house, and we can try to get rid of some bad habits such as arguing with our siblings.

In Family Life, we will learn the importance of honesty and respect in good communication.  The students will be guided to a deeper understanding of prayer as communication with God.

Next, we will discuss the changes that occur during puberty.  We will also discuss the importance of choosing to grow in a healthy way-physically and spiritually.

A Lenten Prayer

Redeemer Lord, as we prepare to celebrate the great mystery of your dying and rising, send your Holy Spirit to guide us this Lent.  May we be led to a spirit of true repentance for our sins and grateful appreciation for the gift of salvation.  May we forgive as we have been forgiven, love as we have been loved, and serve as we have been served.  May we trust in you at all times, confident that in your mercy you have willed the redemption of the whole world.  Amen.

Currently we are learning about decimals: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and estimating. Next we will multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers. We will also solve word problems and how to decide what operations to use to solve the problem.

We will also review what we have learned this year to prepare for the Stanford test.

Science

As we continue our physical science unit, we will study the periodic table.  The students will pick an element from the table and create a "Wanted" poster.  The poster will include the atomic number, symbol, chemical state, uses, characteristics and interesting facts.  Students will work in pairs on this class project.

We will find out what makes up a molecule.  We will explore how compounds are different from elements.  We will learn how scientists have created new types of materials by combining atoms and molecules in different ways.  We will demonstrate this by creating our own new material by making an example of a polymer.

Our next unit of study will be on motion and how force, gravity, and friction can affect the motion of objects.

The Science fair date has been changed to March 29th and 30th.  The exhibits will be brought to school on the 29th and formal presentations will take place on the 30th.

At this point in time, students should know their topic and have started finding research and recording information into their diary.  They also need to keep a list of their resources for when they complete their bibliography.
