Welcome to May
Happy Memorial Day to everyone. It is hard to believe that summer vacation is right around the corner! A special thank you goes out to the fourth grade parents who chaperoned our field trip to Historic St. Mary's City. The fifth graders will be traveling to Washington, D.C. this Friday to take in a play at Ford's Theater, tour the museum, and accompany Detective McDevitt on a historic walking tour.
Academic News
Fourth grade students will be finishing up their story, The Island of the Blue Dolphins. They will be composing color poems to document the true story of Karana's adventures on San Nicholas and creating a scale model of the island as a map to plan their guided tours. In Social Studies we are still working on our research about the European explorers. Students will finish their Great Explorer Project and then take part in a race to Cathay. We will begin an introduction to the colonies.
In Religion students are taking part in our Family Life Curriculum. We are studying about the changes that students will be experiencing and emotions.
In Fifth grade students are completing their study of the American Revolution by finishing their examination of a primary source document, the Declaration of Independence and mapping the major battles of the Revolutionary War. They will begin their outline of the United States Constitution. They will be studying the Westward Movement by reading our story, By the Great Horned Spoon and taking part in our "Wagons Ho" race to California to find gold and erect a real western town.
Hoop News
The basketball team will hold a carwash/breakfast fundraiser on May the 8th at Applebee's Restaurant. Players are parents of team members are requested to come out and help.
It is important that all Varsity players continue to work on their skills and fundamentals over the summer. A number of players have advised me of their plans to attend basketball camps over the summer.

Patriot Program News
The fifth graders who have completed the requirements of the Patriot Program will be taking a field trip to Washington, D.C. They will see a one man play at Ford's Theater, tour the museum, and take Detective McDevitt's tour of Washington that highlights the events that took place on the evening that president Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. |
