The Second Scoop with Mrs. Dotterweich

 Kudos to 2nd grade!

We finished another Reader's Theater and performed for K, 1 and 3rd grades and for Mrs. Jacob, Mrs. Forbes, Mrs. Ruth and Dr. Towery!  The students did an awesome job acting with their voices!  They made the story come alive.  We have worked on knowing the words, being loud and clear, reading smoothly/fluently and with expression and it's starting to pay off.  We are starting a story about Bats and will learn a lot about them in the next few weeks.

Math

We have gotten so good at our basic addition and subtraction facts!  Thank you for all the practicing you are doing at home.  We have begun learning about multiplication.  They will not be learning their basic multiplication facts this year but if your child is interested and wants to start learning them at home, please let them.  We will explore larger numbers past 100 and into the thousands and division in the coming weeks.  We end our year with a unit on measurement and conclude that with a measurement Olympics!

Officer Phil

The Officer Phil program came to see us and teach us about Safety.  It was part magic show and a lot of safety rules to follow!  We enjoyed it very much.  You can go to www.officerphil.com to learn more, play games and see what it's all about.

Hangman Challenge

Beginning in September, I have challenged the class to guess the secret word in a hangman game.  If they guess it, they win a point.  If not, I win a point. When they got to 50, they would win a treat.  Well, they beat me BIG TIME.  They got to 50 and I had only a handful of points.  They had to use their phonics skills to figure out missing letters.  I could tell who understood which phonics rules.  They were great at guessing appropriate letters and words.  I am very impressed!

Handwriting

We are nearly finished with cursive handwriting practice.  This group is really good at cursive handwriting.  They have worked very hard at making the letters appropriately, especially the difficult cursive lower case p.  Everyone tries very hard and it shows!  They are my best handwriters yet!
