The Second Scoop with Mrs. Dotterweich

NEW BEHAVIOR PLAN in CLASS

We have stopped using the check charts for breaking a rule.  We now have a small pocket with 4 cards, green, yellow, orange and red.  If children follow rules, they keep their green card.  If they break a rule, they lose their green card and are on yellow, which is a warning.  If they break a rule again, they lose their yellow card and are on orange.  A note will come home to you to sign and return.  If they break another rule, they lose the orange card and are on red, they lose some recess time and I will contact you by email or a phone call depending on severity of situation.  I hope this helps with the general talking and not listening difficulties that we have been having.

Thanks for your support at home!

SOCIAL STUDIES

We are studying famous people using biographies.  We are also looking at non-fiction books in general.  Students are picking a famous person to read about and write a paragraph.  We will make a power point slide as well in computer lab.  It's interesting to see whom they are picking!

MATH

We are beginning to subtract two digit numbers with renaming.  Students will need to know their basic facts very well to help with this skill.  Please practice basic subtraction facts daily for mastery! Homework will include daily subtraction facts worksheet each night.

DAILY CAFÉ

We are on the home stretch this year and are working hard to become proficient readers.  We are trying to read not only fluently but with expression which seems to be our greatest challenge.  We are also looking more at expanding our vocabulary.  This is the time to fine tune our CAFÉ experience and really make our reading the best it can be!  We will continue learning about the r controlled vowels, which change the vowel sound.  We are beginning the capital cursive letters and continuing to increase our spelling ability.  Applying our handwriting and spelling skills to our writing is our ultimate goal!

RELIGION

We are learning about prayers of petition and intercession.  We have a prayer jar that we are focusing on as we pray each day.  In it are names of those we want to pray for at this time.  Students can add to it each day if they'd like.  We will focus on the Lenten season and how Jesus saved us from sin by his crucifixion.  We will end just before our Easter break with the joy of Easter.
