In the Classroom: Second Grade
Welcome to Second Grade

Hello! Welcome to 2nd grade! My name is Laure Dotterweich and I love teaching 2nd grade! I have always known that I would be a teacher.  As a young girl, I would gather the neighborhood children and play school in my backyard.  So it was only natural that I went to Towson State University and earned my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education.  I began my teaching career in Baltimore County as a Kindergarten Teacher for two half day sessions.  I then took on Full-Day Kindergarten for 5 more years and loved it!  During this time, I earned my Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education with a focus on reading and special needs.

When I had my first child, I decided to stay home and teach him.  While home with my 2 young children, I tutored at Huntington Learning Centers.  Five years ago, I knew it was time to get back to the classroom!  My children were in school full-time and SJA needed a Kindergarten aide.  I really enjoyed being back in school and working with 5 year olds.  When SJA was in need of a 2nd grade teacher, I felt that having my own classroom again sounded really great so here I am.  I love teaching 2nd grade and have begun to think this is where I've always belonged!

In 2nd grade we will be expanding all that was learned in Kindergarten and 1st grade.  These first few years are so important for developing all of the basic skills children need to succeed in school!  We will work on reading fluently, self-correcting when we read, sounding out words, and comprehending what we read as well as expanding our vocabulary.  We will learn more phonics "rules" and apply them to our spelling, reading and writing.  We will write to express ourselves.  We will add and subtract larger numbers and continue to work on measurement, money, time and fractions.  We will begin learning how to write in cursive and practice writing neatly.  We will continue to learn about God and our Catholic Faith.  Science and Social Studies will be a big part of our learning as well.  There is so much to learn and we will work hard!

Your child's progress and success is very important to me.  As a team, we will work to help him or her meet with success every day.  I truly believe all children can and will learn given the appropriate opportunities to do so!  I look forward to working with you this year!
