Welcome to Second Grade!

In second grade, students will expand the basic skills learned in kindergarten and first grade. Our literacy program includes The Daily CAFÉ, which teaches reading strategies that improve Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanded vocabulary.  We will also continue our phonic work to help read, spell and recognize words quickly.  Familiarity with sight words and learning to spelling will be helpful as students begin to develop written expression.  We will journal about math and science as well as writing to persuade, inform or entertain. 

We will also continue to build on our Mathematical skills in place values, fractions, geometry and measurement.  Students will be given exciting opportunities to apply mathematical thinking to problem solve.

These academic concepts; as well as those in Social Studies, will be integrated into our STEM program. This program enables students to find the science, technology, engineering and math connection and use it to solve real-world problems through hands-on projects.  Many of our projects will have students working with partners or in small groups. Social skills learned while working with others will be reinforced as we continue learning about God and the values of our Catholic Faith.
